Howard Stenn was lead trainer for Seattle’s Master Composter program for 22 years, and created the Natural Soil Building curricula and Resource Guide.

Howard and Jil Stenn served on the board and volunteered at Seattle Tilth for several years, initiating projects including the Organic Harvest Festival and redesign of the Good Shepherd Urban Agriculture Center gardens. As President of Tilth’s board from 1987 to 1991, Howard guided its evolution from an all-volunteer organization with a $30,000 annual budget into a professional organization with over $400,000 in annual contracts, grants and revenue generating events.

Howard Stenn was the in-the-field lead developer of an outreach and demonstration program promoting food gardening in Seattle’s low-income communities. He recruited and trained staff and clients, supervised development of several demonstration gardens; and wrote technical bulletins, program promotions and evaluations.

Howard wrote guides to Smart Watering, Growing Healthy Soils, Home Composting, Natural Pest & Disease Management, Salmon Friendly Gardening and Choosing the Right Plants.

Working closely with our Project Manager, Patricia Burgess, we developed over a dozen very high quality educational brochure for the Utility Department to promote Natural Yard Care. Partners in Design produced this comprehensive collection of educational materials.
